HOW DOES OUR EXPERIENCE IN PRECISION ENGINEERING CONTRIBUTE TO BETTER HEARING?
Whether it’s conversations, the chirping of birds or the sound of music: good hearing improves the quality of life and ensures optimal orientation in everyday life. Hearing itself is a complex process: The ear picks up ambient sound and converts the acoustic energy into electrical pulses that are sent to the brain through a series of reactions. The body responds so quickly to sound information that we humans are able to hear the sounds as they occur.
In order for people with severe hearing loss to be able to hear again, cochlear implants are used in medical technology. They bridge the non-functioning part of the inner ear and transmit the sound information directly to the auditory nerve. For this purpose, an electrode carrier is inserted into the cochlea during a surgical procedure. An audio processor captures the sound signals and sends them to the implant, which is embedded under the skin behind the ear.
MED-EL GmbH, the leading company in the field of implantable hearing solutions, manufactures these cochlear implants. They are only a few millimetres in size and are true marvels of microelectronics. For their mass production, Sistro’s expertise is also in demand.

Together with the manufacturer from Innsbruck, we have developed various manufacturing devices for the production of implantable electrodes and housings. These not only make very high demands on surface quality – they also require state-of-the-art coating technologies for good demouldability and a long service life. In addition, these tiny electrodes require a high contour accuracy. Special tooling technologies were required for this. Not only that – even the creativity of our engineers in defining special production strategies was required. The lively exchange of information and close collaboration with the MED-EL designers and developers contributed significantly to the success.
